Trusses have been around long enough that I would have thought most everyone knew by now
b NOT
to cut them. But I guess that’s not the case.
We had a guy cut the bottom chord out of one ply of a girder truss. It’s a 50′ girder truss that carries a hip end from another part of the house – carries about 30,000# in all.
So why did the guy cut it ??? He was installing the garage door opener in the garage, and wanted the brackets to go straight up. Since one ply of the girder truss was in the way, he just cut it out with a sawzall.
Guess I’m posting this partly because I’m pissed off – I spent a ton of time trying to make sure everything was right on that house. Many hours of pouring over the plans trying to figure out the best way to frame it – trying to get as much of it covered as possible without costing too much money. Designing all the trusses and making sure all the loads were applied correctly. Then to have some moron cut into the largest girder on the house is really annoying.
So this is a reminder to all of you who know better, and hopefully a lesson to those of you who didn’t know.
Don’t cut your into your trusses, or your truss dude might go postal on ya.
