Is there a minimum and maximum height for an entrance door lock on a private residence? I just recieved a beatiful front door, 8ft tall, and the door lock is 50 inches off the floor. Is this even code? Is there a code for this? Seems to high to be operated by children.
Thanks,
George

Lock or knob george? A usual standard bore is knob 36"/deadbolt 42" from bottom of door. My experience with mammoth tall doors is limited to those of 100 year vintage, tho I don't remember them being unusually high prep's.

Calvin, The lock is set up for a levered mortise. The exterior thumb lever is 50 inches from the floor, the interior lever is 50.5 inches off the floor.

There is no code for that in NC - I'm pretty fluent in our local codes, but each state, etc has it's own codes so you would have to tell us where you live, and get an answer from someone in your area. A better route might be to call your local building inspections department for your town/county/city, etc.
Questions: are you saying there is a door knob hole, and then a deadbolt lock hole above it, or is there there just one hole? Sometimes when I have ordered doors that are taller than the normal 6'8" it seems like they used the same jigs to set hinges and knobs that they would have used for a 6'8" door, and the heights are abnormally high - in other words, they measured from the top down rather than from the bottom up.
Good Luck,

The lock is a mortise lock set in a custom metal door. It thumb lever is 46" from the top of the door and 50" from the bottom. I really don't know what they were thinking!
