Just curious about the average number of doors and windows in houses. Would you count them in your house and other houses you may know about?
I define windows as something to look outside from not those on kitchens cabinets etc.. Whole windows not just panes of glass. and doors I define as something people enter in and out of, not doggy doors or garage doors etc..
For the record. I have 97 windows (I’ll be adding 3-5 more in a few weeks) and I have 31 doors.. Probably a little on the high side but the house is 5500 sq.ft.

So you haven't got a pot to pi** in but a hundred windows to throw it out of !!! <G>
12 windows and 3 exterior doors in a hair under 2000 sq ft. Of course, one of those windows is 3 mulled and one is 2 mulled.
Thats a lot of windows, Glad i dont have to wash them
I've Built houses with as few as 5 windows in a 3 bed. spec (3 in bedrms, 1 in kit., 1 double mulled in LR) 4 exterior doors (front w/sideglass, french door in DR, exit to garage, and garage service door) and 11 interior doors
total 5 windows and 15 doors
You count. I'll see your 5500, an' rise you 200.

McDesign, I'm curious. What makes one room a "summer parlor" and another a "winter parlor"? Is one on the south side and the other on the north?
I'm imagining these rooms are really, really big, and the whole family does a nomad migration twice a year. Shots are fired to get the dogs moving, there are cries of "Head 'em up, Move 'em out!" , and little clouds of dust go up as the seasonal trek across the foyer begins.
LOL!
Winter Parlor (otherwise known as the "Gentlemen's Parlor", is on the south side of the house; it's heavy and dark in its decor (wood and paint and fabrics) - where you go with your brandy and cigars in the winter.
Summer (Ladies') is on the north (cooler) side of the house; decor is light and airy - perfect for cucumber sandwiches and eggshell-thin teacups.
Forrest - fixin' to move back north with the brood an' the livestock
Thanks for helping out.. and please keep numbers coming..
So far the only consitant pattern coming seems to be location.. places with a view have far more windows than suburban homes..
I'm going to count windows in my neighborhood this weekend and then count them in a bedroom community nearby..
2400' 12 windows, three ext. doors and 12 int. doors. The great room is 30 x 30 with no doors and one of the ext doors is a french door into the master bdrm so one less window was needed.
Now my (future this summer) greenhouse is another story. If you didnt live so far away I could rent some of your space to grow my tomatos.

Wow! That is a LOT of doors and windows.
I've always thought our house had too many doors. 5 of them, 4 on the first floor and one to a porch on the second. That does not count the exterior bilco-type double door to the root cellar, or the doors on our separate garage. The house is about 2000 ft2.
3700 sq. ft.
37 doors
31 windows i am counting closet doors because they are walk in closets( 2 of the bedrooms have 2 walk in closets each0approx. 6 of the ground floor windows are maybe 54x76 dual casements and maybe should be counted as 2 doors apiece? did not count storm doors---only door ways with doors
2 interior archways could have been styled a bit different and included interior french doors---which i may do atsome point to better "zone" the heating.

I feel your "pane" andy--a lot of my windows have 36 panes of glass---it's a never ending process keeping them remotely ship shape Ostensibly 4 of us live here-----but really more like 2-1/2 to 5 plus people It's absurdly waaaaay to large for my wife and I--- but also way cool-- the basement alone has 5 rooms---and I had lived here for months before my wife mentioned that we had a walk in cedar closet at the end of a hallway I knew nothing about! yours is1200-1300 feet bigger than mine---- are you sure you know how many rooms you REALLY have?, LOL
stephen
Well if you wanna add my shop here...thats another 900 sq ft making it 6000sq ft.
I don't even see most of the house. I never use most of the rooms. I keep the heat shut wayyyy down in most of it during the winter. Thank god I have it zoned right allowing me to do that. My wife has to put her coat on when she goes into the kitchen though...really...lol. Downstairs is unfortunatly all on one zone.
I never built onto this house to stay here...never was my intention. I figured someone with 3-4 kids would buy this dump.
I think it's just plain piggy for people to live in houses that are way too big for their real needs.
House gets relisted in another month or so not that that'll do anything. NOTHING is selling around here. Hopefully it'll pick up.

while i primarily agree with you--- i bought this place primarily for the challenge of restoring it over 20 years--and my wife was the "moving factor"--she envisioned using the place as a "Bed & Breakfast" for my sons friends----- I go to bed each night never knowing who will be staying here in the morning.- also have various extended family members who live with us on a sort of rotating basis from time to time.

Do roof windows or skylights count?
A bay window is called a bay window but is made up of three window units. Do your rules count that as one or three?

I counted mine.and yes a bay/bow window could be 3 or 5 or whatever windows. However a double hung window is only one window.
It's not about ego we're trying to find out through a back door what sort of windows/doors per sq.ft. is practical and realistic..
Naturally homes where View is more important have far more windows than suburban communities where privacy and cost has a priority.
This all came about as a result of my brother in law's comment about energy efficency and houses.
His is a stick built home with foamed walls and mine is SIP's On per sq.ft. basis mine costs 33% less to heat than his and so we deteriorated to the windows and doors..
He has a similar amount of doors 30 to my 31 but 1/2 of the windows.. (yes he has a lake front view as well). Turns out my neighbor with stick built house and foamed walls slightly larger than mine spends $135 more per month on average than I do heating and cooling his place. His window/door count is 88/26.
I counted each openning as one window, some of the opennings have multiple units ganged together.
Shouldn't sq ft of glazing and orientation factor into your calculations?
yes double glazed and low E also but that gets too detailed and we're not trying for exact formula.
Openings is pretty subjective.. for example I count the front view windows as three.. the main window is roughly a fixed 5'x5' while the 2 side double hung windows are roughly 3'x5' ( have two such openings but I counted them as six windows)
I have twin 8 foot doors and the windows in them are roughly 7 feet high and three feet wide So I counted each door as a door and each window as a window
Would a 60" closet openning with a pair of 30" bifold doors count as two doors or four? Would an exterior openning with a main door and a storm door count as one door or two?
Edited 3/20/2009 10:26 pm ET by sisyphus
I'm guessing the closet would be 2 doors but the entrance I count as one door..
"we're trying to find out through a back door what sort of windows/doors per sq.ft. is practical and realistic.. "I see - bootstrap analysis rather than sq ft of windows to exterior wall surface ratios.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Yeh sorta.. the city has a complex formula it uses to calculate allowable windows to walls , other places have sq.ft rules etc.. there doesn't seem to be any corelation from one building district to the next..
The doors thing is kinda an add on. I note most people said 2 doors.. when I was trying to get a count on total number of doors (interior included).
It's my contention that most houses have a similar number of doors.. one for each bedroom one for each closet, etc..
I deliberately skipped stuff like window sizes and type of windows..
I didn't count interior doors at all for you, just opennings in exterior surfaces.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Yes I guess I wasn't clear on that. I hope nobody thinks I've got 30 doors going outside <grin>
I figured you had 30 going out and only 20 coming back.

Yeah, but half the guys here are only 15 years into building their own homes and haven't gotten around to the interior doors yet. There's a sheet across the bathroom door -- maybe.

28 windows, 3 exterior door
2800 sq. feet
Seven windows and two doors in 900 square feet.
Hmm my first house had 11 windows and three doors in a little over 900 sq.ft. (not counting the boat house)
I suspect the differance was because of the lake frontage
Couldn't be anything as trivial as, say , floorplan or elevation huh.
You're probably right, probably was the water.Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City
Well maybe mine shouldn't count. I live in a trailer at a stable I bought when I got divorced. I make a comfortable living and most people in my circumstance live in houses, but I'm fixing this up and am pleasantly surprised how little space a single 59 year old guy needs. Kind of like a club house or fort when you were a kid.
Why not? I lived in a 16 foot travel trailer through much of my Naval career.. thought that was plenty.. (first wife didn't)
I have to admit that I first thought that this was a retorical exercise in ego stroke.

All right, I'm in:
Existing suburban home ("territorial" views - real estate agent speak for "you can see your lawn from inside if you want") a classic dark, mid 70's rambler:
~1650 sf 13 windows, 3 doors
after remodel:
~2500 sf 21 windows (2 are skylights), 5 doors
I haven't broken down any of the mulled together units, and I'm considering sidelights as windows rather than doors. I'm not counting any relights or internal doors.
Funny thing is, if I would have just taken our designers plan, the remodel would have at least 6 additional windows.
I love the "light and airy feeling" home as much as the next guy, but if you can't cover them up, windows turn into black holes at night, sucking heat and light away from the living space. I see that a lot in places where people have "great rooms" with a massive wall of windows. It feels like you're standing in a cold field under a street light at night.

675 sq. ft. , nice views.
23 windows
3 doors, two that could be counted as windows.
Most are single pane, slowly to get changed out for thermal units.
Some of the windows are going to be replaced with larger units which will cut down on the count but sq. ft. of windows will stay the same.
How about square footage of windows to floor space? A quick guestimate gives me 320 sq.ft. windows : 675 sq.ft. floor.

664 sq.ft. 2 windows ,2ft by 3ft one door .

I've revised my earlier response in accordance with your explanations and have 14 windows and 15 doors and just under 1000 sq ft in the house I'm renovating. The other building has 33 windows and 26 doors and is about 2400 sq ft.
Home: 3 exterior doors , 29 interior doors
13 windows taller and wider than a person standing on the window sill ( 30" thick walls , stone ) 2nd floor : 8 skylights , 7 open for air
attached wood shed : 1 garage door with windows on top & i mandoor
Free standing garage : 2 8 x 9 garage doors with windows at top plus a man door , 2 octagon windows in loft , 4 windows in lower part
Shop , office , storage building : ! man door & 2 8 x 9 garage doors with windows accross top , 10 windows + 2 in loft & 4 interior doors
i did not count windows in exterior doors which they all have
Know i know why it has taken me so long to renovate and build on this property over the years
Frenchy i think you have too much time on your hands and should get a job yo keep you busy instead of playing in a tower & hanging out at Knots

My job right now is finding a job.. That's what I devote the majority of my time to. Considering that unemployment is increasing not decresing and even partners in architectual firms are being laid off Things aren't going well right now..
At the start of this year about 80% of those that I network with seeking new employment were laid off. Since then it's increased to about 95%
Even those not in industrial or construction industry have been getting pink notices or are under threat of them.
being in probally the most stable area of canada for employment its hard to feel the pain one suffers elsewhere but i have been on the other end before
this area is totally influenced by the federal govt of Can and it is hiring big time these days ( where my wife works )
my main job these days is renovations , lot sales in my subdivision are a side line & buying lumber is a hobby
Met up today with a old buddy & went to town and looked at tools & had a chinese lunch all in all a rough day at the office ( drove over 300 miles weds & thrs picking up lumber ) some other days im half bored to death ( short attention span problem )
no work or demand for my services drives me crazy thats why i couldent hack it when i first semiretired at 50 wintering at fla home and summers in canada
unemployment bothers men a lot more than women i find
if i were to win the lottery here (its tax free) i would start some new projects where i wouldent need the services of a banker ( im sitting on 32 acres accross from my current developement ) im just trierd of hassels from bankers , my current one hasent called me in the last 3 years & i like it that way
I think the economy is going to start getting better soon in north america but their will be a lot of new rules and adjustments for all
i lost practically nothing in the stockmarket as i have very little invested in it and i tell the brokers to write their shares on toilet paper so i can get some use out of them when they are next to worthless and they dont seem to appreciate my humour
try to cheer up you have lots to be proud of & many things to be thankful for this is no bs cheers
