Buy that gore-tex filter, I think it has a name something like Cleanstream or clean something. Costs a few bucks, but well worth it.
*They make liners for the shop vacs also that may help, "Only in America" bet you havent heard that one before ;)
*As a Yankee immigrant living in Canada, I am familiar with the phrase. Thanks Ron
*I have one of those Goretex filters. They are, all in all, a really good filter if for no other reason than you can easily clean them, usually just by tapping them a bit if the crud is dry. They do plug up with drywall dust, though, so you have to clean frequently. I bought mine a Leigh Valley Tools, but then I'm a canuck, eh?
*My Ridgid shop vac takes a factory "2-Stage" filter that claims to catch 99.5% of dust. Made for drywall sanding use and other fine stuff. $16.96 at HOME CHEAPO. They do clog, but that's better than sending a cloud of dust all over someone's house.-Stray
*Two things come to mind. Stick a spare hose in the exhaust side, and run it out the window.Throw some sweeping compound down - it might stick to the dust enough to make it settle in the shop vac instead of blowing back out.
*I buy ShopVac "small particle" vacumn bag liners that say they accept drywall dust, and they do, at Walmart; about $8 for three. Never lost a vacumn yet using these bags, and it keeps the little drywall dust boogers right in there.
*We bought one of those EXPENSIVE Loveless drywall vacuums. One thing it does really, really well is give you static shocks to remember. It doesn't do anything else well.
*Go for the gore-tex filter. Worth the money, easier to clean, last a lot longer, and actually keeps the drywall and fine dust inside for the most part. I think I paid $30 or $40 for it a few years ago. Works great in the Sears vac. Jeff
*ShopVac drywall dust bag. Dust won't even touch the filter. When the bags full you just throw it away.
*I use Sears shop vacs with their regular filter. Never had a problem with D.W. dust. Just clean the filter often making sure to get all the dust off. Put the filter in a trash bag and beat the hell out of it (make sure the bag is closed tight and go outside). About a pound of dust will come out.
*Thanks for all the input, I went to Home depot and bought the bag liner, $11 for two, works great and I love just throwing the bag out at the end of the day.
