Ok Pros, This is my question. I have a 9ft ceiling that I need to texture.Every joint has a rather straight crack. All were previously poorly patched & not taped with the repair. The rafters are actually boxed trusses about 12” high on 19” centers. This is a basement with 2 stories above in a home 11 yrs old. There are minor settlement cracks in a few small areas on a few walls.
Will I be safe to retape & texture (skip trowel, swirll design)
Could it be as simple as not enough fasteners,&/or poorly dried compound?
Your thoughts & opinions are greatly appreciated Thanks. Multire

I would say that to rescrew it and retape it would be fine, If you are comfortable with the structural side of it.

Thanks for your reply Mike, this is a million $ home & I dont want to take any chances, plus its a friend. Would a drop ceiling with tasteful panels be a better option?

I, myself, hate drop ceiling panels. (I'm not the person to whom you addressed your question BTW, just adding my two cents). What about a coffered or tray ceiling that is furred down from the existing?
Yuck.
They do have some very elegant panels though.

If by dropped ceiling you mean a fancy acoustical tile ceiling, I would say no.
If you mean a custom framed beamed or coffered type ceiling, then the answer is it depends on the type of architecture your house is based on.
If you have a contemporary design, the ceiling may not flow with the rest of the house. If you have, say, a Craftsman style house, then such a ceiling may fit in nicely.
You don't want someone to walk into the house and think "What the hell was he thinking"
It does sound like the ceiling is cracking because of drying/ settling, but we have no way of knowing without being in your house. If your house is moving, whatever you do is subject to more cracking.
I would probably opt for retaping and not muddle with the design
Just my opinion, hope it helps. Mike

11 yrs. old?
Sounds like the framing wasn't allowed to dry before the rock was installed.
I'd do as mentioned....screw it off a bit and retape.
