Just bought a new computer with XP home, service pack 2. Cannot receive any messages. Can send, but not receive e-mails. Anyone have any solutions?
I called India via my ISP, but they say it is an MS software issue and not theirs. All my settings are correct (as far as me and the twit on the other end of the phone can tell), but I keep getting a logon id/password dialogue box regardless what I use as a password (I’ve used the same pw for ten years and haven’t changed it.) Oddly enough, my son can receive, but not send. He’s a computer engineering student and can’t figure it out, so what chance do I have, lol.
Any help would be great, thanks. I’ll have to check back, since I can’t receive any e-mail telling me someone has responded… Life was so much easier when…

I probably can't answer this.
But first try turning off the firewall settings.
But for someone that is familar with XP will want to know what email client that you are using.
Also what type of email connection are you using. Some ISP have several different type of connections.
Who is your ISP?
SNET. Snet.net, or snet.yahoo.com. POP3/SMTP connections for incoming/outgoing. I had DSL prior to the new computer, including a firewall, with no problems. I'll try turning off the settings though and see what happens, thanks.
Edit, turned off firewall, no effect. Computer wasn't pleased, so I turned it back on.

I'm not running XP here so can't check for sure..so take this for what it might be worth.
I can only relate with 98 at the moment.
Open Outlook (presuming that's what you're using)
Then....Tools/accounts/ highlight the account in question/ask for properties/ then servers. If you have secure authentication/SSL checked for either incoming or outgoing......try unchecking those.
Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's setup soas not to require secure authentication, but thanks anyway.

You did not indicate what email client that you have.
I have SBC DSL. Now I have had it 10 months so I started out with SBC/Yahoo and did not migrate.
If you migrated or still on the old servers you might have some slightly different settings.
And I don't know how integrated SNET is into SBC.
But SBC now requires Authenatization so make sure that option is set and in my email client the Xmit setting page also requires the user ID which is [email protected] and the password.
And my servers is smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
I am guessing that yours is smtp.snet.yahoo.com
Can't you still read your email via the web on Yahoo?
You might try asking here

But I see that it is heavy with off-topic messages.
So if that does not help you might try asking here

Also they have an MS forum and I see that there are a number XP questions.
SBC DSL. I've tried changing settings to reflect past and present requirements, neither of which produced results. I will have to look at the links you provided, thanks. I appreciate your long response and help. Someday, when I finally can receive mail, I'm gonna have to take a day off to read it all.

I'm impressed. I found my e-mail on yahoo. They were holding it for ransom, but turns out I was too broke to spring it loose. Thanks. But now I have to use the Yahoo mail service instead of Outlook, which I prefer. At any rate, thanks again for the help. I also found out I had 1886 emails in my bulk folder. I don't think I'll be opeing that one.

Good clue here: If your wife and son can access mails, compare your settings to theirs: SNMP, POP3, Proxy, Gateway, etc....
already tried that. they're the same. As a friend likes to say; it is a puzzlement.
edit, in fact, i set them all up! But i checked anyway, and they are the same.

Go to Yahoo mail.
Then options.
Then Pop Access and forwarding (Under Management).
Then see that the Web and POP options is selected.
Hi,
You need to correct your incoming/outgoing mail settings. POP3 is one, SMTP is the other one. Do you know where to find them? Can you copy them from another, working PC?
I have SNET too but unfortunately I'm working now, won't be home until midnight. I'll send you my settings when I get home.
(computer weenie turned contractor - don't tell - ok?)
LOL
my account is with SBC, but i was with snet (years) before the merger. Consequently, my original settings were pop.snet.net and smtp.snet.net. After installing SBC DSL, the settings became pop.snet.yahoo.com and smtp.snet.yahoo.com. I've tried both of these settings and neither works; the yahoo settings causes a ID/Password box to pop up that I can't satisfy with any password i've ever used (I keep a log of all passwords and ID, middle age will do that to you.) Any insight you can provide would be great.

Have heard many stories about SP2
If you are using Norton as your protection then turn off all MS stuff. SP2 comes with firewall and virus protection.
TURN IT OFF and try again
"Sir, if you were my husband I would poison your tea"
"Madam, if I were your husband I would drink it." Sir Winston Churchhill
I do have Norton running. I know SP2 installed a firewall. So you think I should turn off Norton and try it? Might as well, tried everything else.
Thanks.

Tried it, it didn't work. I turned off Norton, but left the firewall on. Turns out the new windows security center checks to see if the anti-virus is on, regardless what provides it. It stated I had no protection. To me, it doesn't appear as though Windows has virus protection, though it does have a firewall. There was no place/program/file I found to execute a Windows based AV program. Maybe I turnoff Norton and the firewall, see what that does.
Edit, tried turning off Norton and the firewall, still no e-mail.

Nick
Am having the same problems as you. I have XP, had it for a year.
Problem just started, called my local server and they said that it was a nation wide problem, something about a needing a new gateway???
But concluded it was not at my end. BTW we have Outlook Express for e-mail.

What I don't understand is that I can't receive on this (new) computer, nor the desktop unit in the living room. Yet my wife and son can with no problems. We're all on the same server, ISP, etc. It's like SBC has a conspiracy to prevent me from receiving my daily hundred or so spams.

I'll have to look into it more, I just installed a new firewall, was having the problem before but now everybody has me wondering.

SBC changed their username requirements (Member ID) in February from: username to: [email protected]. Check that first
FYI - Here are my settings (stuff that's checked). Even though I go through Woodbury Telephone they should be the same.

- Incoming Mail Servers = pop.snet.net
- Server Type = POP3 Server
- Outgoing Mail Server = smtp.snet.net
- Outgoing Mail Server username = memberID
- SSL = If possible
** Networking **
- Type of dialup server I am calling = PPP
- Network Monitor Driver= checked
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) = checked
- QoS Packet Scheduler = checked
- File and Printer sharing = checked
- Service Advertising Protocol = checked
- Client for Microsoft Networks = checked
** TCP/IP Settings **
- Obtain an IP address automatically
- Obtain DNS server address automatically
- Use default gateway on remote network = checked

Good luck & let me know how you make out. BTW - I've fixed a few PCs where spyware changed their settings! (bastages) Charter recommends the http://www.spysweeper.com program to remove them.
