You can either get bracketed plastic boxes or use bracketed metal boxes. Attach them with sheet metal screws. You may find that there is no cost savings with plastic boxes other than the prenailed cheap single gang ones. I assume that you are working on a residential project. Many jurisdictions do not allow NM (romex) or plastic boxes in commercial work.
*Hi Russell-I realize this doesn't answer your question, but my electrician only uses metal boxes with metal studs, even in residential work.John
*Russell,I can't recommend the use of the plastic boxes but if your determined to use them the obvious answer is to screw a small scab of 2x to the face of the stud (use fire rated if required) and nail the box to that. Caddy makes all sorts of interesting clips and hangers they might have something as well. IMHO the metal boxes are much more versatile and far superior. Richard Max
