to make room for an attic ladder i need to move a couple of wires that cross that area of the attic . to do so i would need to extend the wire. what i planned to do is turn off the breaker cut the wire and connect to a six foot piece. my connections will be in a junction box and secured extend the wire and connect to the other cut end in another junction box this will give me enought length to reposition the wires.
my question one of these wires is a supply to a dryer and elec stove it has a double 30 amp breaker. is it adequate to make my wire connection with wire nuts?

Can't answer your question but have one for you.
any aluminum there?

no why?
aluminum wire is more difficult to work with.
the quys here who can answer your question may assume all copper because it wasn't mentioned.
not sure how much aluminum wire is still out there, but you didn't mention how old the house is.bobl Volo Non Voleo
Wire nuts will work. Just be sure to get ones sized for the wire, read the package, and make them up firmly. Strip enough to get the wires to complete a full rotation around each other but no so much that the copper is anywhere near exposed when the wire nut is tight.
Staple the wires to avoid them getting snagged on passing workmen. Use connectors on the boxes to avoid strains on the connections. Screw the boxes down firmly and don't forget to use a cover plate. If it is going to be near or under insulation a short stub of PVC pipe screwed to the side of the joist makes finding them a lot easier.
Route the cables well away from the ladder area. Human nature says that boxes of stuff will be placed near the entrance. Within 6' used to be the rule. Now we place them close to the eaves where being trod upon or abused by boxes is unlikely.
Be safe.
thanks thats what i needed to know

One wire for both? Shouldn't be: they should each have their own circuit.
And the wire should be kept well clear of the opening. 6' technically.
And don't cut any attic/roof trusses.
And don't track dirt across the clean kitchen floor! {G}

yeah i thought it was odd that the stove and dryer were on the same wire but thats how it was done when the house was built my customer is not using the dryer plug they use the gas instead so only the stove is being used right now but i wondered what would happen if they were using both.
the attic ladder will fit in between the joist so no cutting
thanks for the advise
They'd have to remember not to use both the stove and dryer at the same time. Just like we have to remember never to use the toaster and microwave at the same time, or we blow a 15 amp fuse. Eventually this will get upgraded from a 30 amp service to 400 amps.
