Elevator? Two story? You short on land? Even with an elevator (look into inspection requirements) you're adding substantial inefficiency. Pretty sure you're going to lose any building cost advantage with an elevator.
OTOH, I've got a lot of land and built a 4 story building (drive in on 2 levels). Nice building, but one of the dumbest things I've done.

So I'm thinking about building a elevator.
You talking about a material hoist, or a passenger elevator? Bet you could build a workable material hoist with a modified bumper winch and some angle iron. Garage door track and rollers for guides.

Frenchy suggested awhile back getting a cheap used forklift with still good lift and building a box on the lift mechanism, most pretty much then ready to go.
I use my backhoe and track loader as an equipment elevator to the 2nd story on the barn.
i wouldn't go with any type cable system... cable fails not good... hyd fails... it just leaks everywhere and desends...
i would look for a old forklift mast... which is pretty much what short run elevators use anyway (that type side lift design) if you are a good junk man & handy, i think it could be built for under $500... and thats with all the safety features everyone will yell at you about use'n... I've designed one like this have yet to build it but sure i will one day... i have all the parts ready

Buying a real elevator,even a cheap one, is $20K
