I’m a small custom builder/remodeler with a limited GC’s license. I do great work at a fair price though not the cheapest price around but I stay busy. Working my way up into some bigger projects and will be hiring some employees soon. Would like to be able to offer basic health insurance after a 90 day trial period in an attempt to keep the good employees around.
In my area(rural Southeast) health insurance for construction workers is almost unheard of even though the construction industry is thriving.
Is it this way in other parts of the country?
Will it be too expensive for me to provide it and still stay competitive?
Are y’all able to provide it, if not what other creative benefits are you able to provide that employees seem to stick around for?

My boss provides health insurance.
Depending on the persons age etc. It runs around 150-200 an employee, it's not the best insurance in the world but it isn't bad either. It's for a group of about 8 people I'm not sure how much that matters.
Other benifits are a Gas/Phone check, a "tool buying program" basically he allows you to purchace a tool and pay it off with a certain amount taken out of monthly checks. Also have life and a 401K
This wouldn't work for you, but I read something today about employers on the CA/Mexico border signing up for medical and dental insurance with Mexican insurers. Apparently, the care is good and the cost is about half.
I KNEW I shoulda paid attention in Spanish class - lol.
I offer it to my staff. (only have 3 and only one needs it) I found a policey that is more like major medical. It has a Dr. office co-pay of $35, script co pay is the same and it has a $2500 total family deductable.
But it will keep them out of bankruptcy should someone get really sick and I figure if it was an all at once deal where someone was hurt in an accident or something I could help with the deductable. Cost is $400 a month. We each pay half. DanT
