eng. hardwood or laminate on cement?

I am in the processing of researching the best covering for my basement floor – the air is relatively stable, no moisture that I can see or feel but it is “under grade” – I think that is what they clal it.
Under the old rug, there are 9 X 9 inch tiles (and since it is from the 60’s I am not going to remove them and just leave them – even though they do come up cleanly and are solid). Under those tiles is cement. I am going to cover the tiles with either eng. hardwood or laminate flooring. I was suprised that eng. hardwood is more expensive than regular hardwood and the gentleman at homeDepot told me that I need to use eng. hardwood on cement because regular hardwood will creak (as it expands and compresses with change in weather) and laminate won’t do. Any suggestions on this?

Is your floor level in all directions?
Probably the first thing you need to do is level the floor.
Then cover it with inch thick polystyrene sheets, thicker is better.
The cover the polystyrene with t&g glued boards.
This will give you a warm comfortable floor.

for either of these used as a floating floor-or glue down for that matter-the slab needs to be FLAT. Level has nothing to do with it.

I have an 8' solid aluminum 1/4"x4" straight edge. Heavy, but straight.
and, a six foot level.
The ripped edge of a pc of plywood might be straight enough to give you an idea of high/lo spots.
