We are remodeling our second floor and really don’t want carpet on the floors (at least not wall-to-wall). We want wood, but would love feedback and/or advice from anyone who has experience with engineered hardwoods vs. regular hardwood. Laminate is probably out. FYI, our preferences run towards the lighter woods and finishes, like maple or ash rather than oak or other dark woods. We have kids and dogs.
Thanks for any input!

how about maple - the real thing?
To my thinking, Maple is less likely to darken as much over time and hard maple is very light in colour. I do not think of ash as an especially light colour, unless it is compared to another darker wood.
honestly, some of the laminates are likely to wear better with dogs and kids than real wood, but again Maple is good and hard. That is why it is used in bowling alleys and basketball courts

Advantech for flooring?Great idea. When you're out there in the world selling your services again, you can say "I use common materials in an uncommon way." :)********************************************************

How about bambo?
Although we like the look, my research so far suggests that bamboo is quite susceptible to water damage. Also, it's even more expensive than either regular hardwood or engineered hardwood, I think. Good thought, though. Thanks!
What type of water damage are you anticipating on the second floor? From $1.97 for carbonized to $3.25 for enginered bamboo, what are you pricing out that is less $?
You might want to look into EcoTimber, or if you like reclaimed wood, Terramai.

Thanks for your help.
Ever seen a hickory floor? It's a different look. Mostly light but has a lot of color contrast.
