Exterior tile in a freezing climate
I am rebuilding an exterior, tiled balcony over a heated, insulated living space. The previous deck, built without an overhang, leaked through the cracked grout onto the siding. I plan to rebuild the deck with 3/4 inch CDX, a 3 inch overhang, drip edge and an EPDM rubber membrane. Is there a thinset/mastic I can use directly over the rubber membrane? Should I use an uncoupling membrane? What type of mortar and grout is suitable for tile exposed to rain, snow and frequent freeze/thaw cycles?

Both the substrate and the setting bed have to be sloped. Water will migrate to through the grout onto the setting bed and into the setting bed, and will freeze and crack.Dirt
Sand
Sloped Substrate (concrete or deck mud) quarter inch per foot
Membrane
Drainage Mate (troba or gravel)
Sloped Setting Bed (deck mud)
