Any suggestions as to what type of wood to use for exterior trim here in Minnesota? Pine, Cedar, or one of the new “plastic” woods? It will be painted.

I'm in Iowa and we use a lot of cyprus, paints good and is cheaper than cedar, a lot less knots to.

I'm in DSM, where the heck are you buying cyprus in Iowa?
Thanks, Barry
It's not the habitat, it's the inhabitants.
Won't you be my neighbor

I believe that we are getting it from either Paxtons or Liberty, which if your in DSM should not be a problem for you, I'll check tomorrow at work to see if I'm right but I thought that's where the truck that delivered it came from. I know that the cost was not all that bad, cheaper than clear cedar but that may be because we bought approx. 5000 bd. ft.

Thanks everyone!

There is a product made by Azek. It is pricey but it doesnt have the problems that wood has. It comes in 1x sizes and they have a corner that is pre-mitred so you dont have to do it on site. They used to use cypress to build ships. That and teak. I just got a media kit from a company called Temple. They have this product line called trimcraft cornice system. You can check it out at http://www.temple.com
Siding Guy, Thanks for the info, I will look into it.

I've used Prime-lock pine on several painted projects. It comes in 16' lengths, is stable, and is primed on all 4 sides. Finish painting is a snap. Around here it's available in 1x4 - 1x12. Good luck.
