EZ shim

JLazaro317 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 1, 2006 02:35am

Anybody tried EZ shim plastic hinge shims? I need to shim some hinges from time to time and these seem like the ticket instead of fabricating my own.

I can't speak for that exact brand

We have been able to purchase something similiar from our local yard sized for different size hinges made of plastic.  The ones I've used are not tapered as the drawing indicates on the web page.

They are handy and great time savers, not that it takes a whole lot of time to cut out shims from cardboard and what not, but why waste the time if you don't have too?

I'd say go for it, I can't see the taper hurting, and the one's I've used work good.

Thanks for the link, I can see those being very useful...shim shim-a-ree Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"

Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"

God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"

God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but

The next time you see me comin' you better run"

Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"

God says, "Out on Highway 61."

On the rare occasion I would shim a hinge, a slice of cardboard did the trick.

However, a box of those shims would come in pretty handy when setting doors in steel frames.

May neighbors respect You, and troubles neglect You.

    Looks OK.

I usually use playing cards for shims. But now I can never finish a game of solotaire, I don't think I am playing with a full deck.

You mean you want to use the quick align ones not the ez shim don't you?  Both look cool.

Now this will degenerate into an ez vs quick align (inside joke).

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll order some and try them out. In the past I've used business cards, cardboard, and even shims cut from vinyl siding (finally found a good use for it!). Seems to be much quicker than making my own.John

Another use for vinyl siding is to cut strips about an 4 inches wide off the bottom then cut 1" strips and use them to hold Christmas lights along the edge of a roof by slipping them under the shingles.  Kind of like a piece of j-channel.

One more use of the vinyl I saw as a tip in the one of the mags or books I've read recently is to cut a piece the size of the front of your tape and glue it on.

Makes a good note pad that can be easily cleaned off for writing down measurements.

      QUICK ALIGN!

      1. rasconc | Dec 01, 2006 08:32am | #11

But let me tell you about the shim.  That pipe shredder looked pretty cool, I do not remember the exact price but it was in your range ( to jump a thread).  The Golden part sure was right.  It looks like a complicated piece to make though.

man, I don't know if it's just because I'm just getting ready to leave the office for the night and I'm spent or what, but that post has me way confused....

I was ribbing about trying to tell you about the ez shim since you said you chose the quick align vs ez shim.  The other was a reference to your thread about the pipe clean-up tool in JLC (Pipe Shredder) and it's cost, I remember that it was very pricey.  Ribbing that it was your price range since you had invested in the Festool line. (;-)

I ordered the Quick Align hinge shims today. What a PITA! Nobody local sells them but I could order throught ACE or Do-It Best. Online at DIB you had to order like $90 worth of each size which would be a lifetime supply. I found them on Amazon through Ace Hardware outlet for $4.99 per package plus shipping. So 4 packages cost me $30.99 delivered to my doorstep. I sure wish the manufacturer would sell direct.John

I've used something similar. They are plastic shims, rigid, about 1/32" thick, not tapered. The screw holes are actually slots so that you can loosen a hinge leaf a bit and slide a shim in behind it without removing the leaf all the way. Very handy, very quick. They came with a Loewen door.
