I need to replace a two handle tub faucet, they have a new tub surround that I do not want to ruin. My thought is to try and replace the faucet from the access panel by cutting out the 2X4 , that the faucet is mounted to with a saw , and cutting all copper pipes. This should allow me to remove the old faucet. I would install new faucet in reverse order, My question is , will this work? I can not see any problems , does anyone have any suggestions? Learn how synthetic panels can create watertight shower walls and tub surrounds — or a big problem.

Sounds like you're on the right track. When at all possible, I'll install the surround first, then install the shower control from the other side of the wet wall, so you should be good to go. Be careful cutting out the 2x4; it doesn't take much to damage the surround, and a sawzall is one of the most indescriminate tools you could ever hope to own.
If you don't think you'll have enough room to work, enlarge the access. Better to make a new panel than to swear at the shower control for 4 hours.
