   Nuke

   What do you mean by a fake coffered ceiling? I've put in about 15 coffered ceilings in the last 5 years and none of them was structual - all fake I guess! Maybe I'm missing something here.

   Oops, my bad. I mean non-wood. I meant like in faux marble, etc. I was think if a system existed without the need for a finish carpenter and something along the DIY variety. I thought I had seen ceiling tiles once where the tiles themselves were recessed and gave a coffered appearance, but I was thinking something more retrou-fitting for a pre-existing drywall ceiling.

   Kind of like taking a bunch of picture frames and tacking them up to the ceiling with spaces between the frames that are then covered over (the spaces, not the interior of the framed area).

   On Hometime I saw a basement being finished off. They were installing some sort of drop ceiling that used raised(inverted) panels to create a sort-of coffered ceiling. the panels were cherry and they were a shallow ashtray pan with crown moulding inside them. I'm  sure they come in other woods or paint grade.

   It looked pretty good but I dont know the manufacturer or any other info about it. So there is something out there that is sort of a diy'er.

   Have you considered buying picture frames and tacking them to the ceiling?

   That whole ceiling was made of pieces in the shop, and screwed to the finished ceiling with DW screws; the heads were covered by all those little buttons, spray-painted gold. 

   The idea was just what you're talking about - make everything beforehand, of manageable pieces (longest was 21") with an assembly method that allows field adjustment (the black cubes), and install in literally a matter of hours in a finished room - I did move the dining room table, but that was all.

   There is an embossed DW material.

   It is NOT cheap from what I have heard. Also my guess is that it takes more than the average DW skills to install/finish it properly.
