We can’t afford the cost of the metal or rubber or plastic ones that we have found. Something less than $200 per square uninstalled would be tolerable, any suggestions?

About your only choice in that price range would be some of the slate look-alike asphalt/fiberglass shingles. The names are eluding me at the moment, but I believe GAF and Owens-Corning both have something that looks kinda-sorta-like and imitation slate.

GAF Slateline shingles look incredible! And I just got a quote for some English Grey ones @ $93 per square. I think they have a 30 or 40 year warranty and they just look great! I think the website is gaf.com.
Saw an ad in the last JLC for CeertainTeed;s Grand Manor "Shangle". Looked great in their add (like shingles), but have no idea what the price per square would be. jimz
