I just wanted to mention that if anyone needs a handy, versatile felling axe, I found an incredible tool.
I wanted an axe that wasnt huge that I could drop trees with rather than a heavy splitting axe. I searched all around and decided that I didnt want to drop a bill on this occasional use item.
Lowes had a Fiskars with the head mounted in the poly handle. For $30 I gave it a shot, and its incredible. Its sharp from the start, light, and has a lifetime guarantee.
Because of gas, noise, and the horrible shape I was in I used the axe instead of the chainsaw. I now dont want to go without it, and 2 other people tried mine, and have since gone out and gotten one. Because of how compact it is, it functions like a pack axe, and closes the gap on a hatchet…. you can choke up on it and easily swing it with one hand. I cant think of any reason to take a hatchet out instead.
One thing I noticed was that I wish the handle was an inch or two longer, but you get used to it and I just drop a finger off the butt end of the handle.

I saw the Estwing as well, but it was only 26 inches, and the shaft being steel, I felt like there was way to much chance of it getting bent.

Are we talking about this one? Two pound head, 28" handle?

Yes,
Thats the one. I was so out of shape for that type of work, that my 3.5 pd. was uncomfortable to use for a few hours. After a couple days a week, for a few weeks with the Fiskars, the 3.5 has become easy.
I now use the Fiskars for small stuff and to drop trees, and the 3.5 to cut length.
It also totes around well in the woods.
