…Construction.
We are continuing the work on our old home…and a new addition has been framed and sheathed by my contractor/friend. Where the new and the old meet there is a large gap that exists between the old framing and siding and the new framing and sheathing…
When it comes time to finishing this off with trim, it will look great, but I’m concerned about whether I should fill this gap to help prevent any water from getting down in this gap….
The gap is a bout 1 1/2 inch X 1 1/2 inch and runs from the floor to the roof. My contractor suggested filling with Sikaflex, bridging the material with bituthene, and then covering with the trim/siding material…but this seems to be too big of a gap for the the Sikaflex 1a…
Any other suggestions or would you recommend this approach?
Thanks for the help.

Rip a 2x by down a blade or so so it'll fit. Put a bead of adhesive on both sides of the gap on the inside then tap you shim in. A few toe nails and you should be good. Doubled plywood would work as well. Flash and seal before trimming to be certain of weather tightness. If the shim doesn't fill all the way in to the inside wall insulate prior to rocking.
