When I was out in the midwest, all the trim shops sold fingerjointed primed yellow poplar trim. It worked well for all-painted jobs. Now that I am in the northeast, I can only get primed fingerjointed stock in ponderosa and eastern white pine. I am concerned that joints and grain might telegraph through the finish more than what I have experienced with the poplar. Your comments, please?

all the exterior finger jointed trim will telegraph after a season.. even the Red cedar.. which is why we switched to GP PrimeTrim
Are you talking interior or exterior?
Have you seen the Princeton Products or the Windsor One stuff?
Excellence is its own reward!
This is interior. I am using WRC clear outside. The Windsor One is what is available here. The salesmen claim it is "double primed" but I can see the finger joints and grain. Having been in the exterior door biz, it all looks like door frame stock to me, and I know those joints telegraph, as well as the grain.
Piffin-
Have you used the Windsor One interior moldings yet? I've been looking for them here in NJ, and all the distributors listed on Windsor's website haven't even heard of the stuff (nothing like knowledgable salesmen, huh? lol). Just curious as to how the cost compares to FJ pine or MDF, and how well it works.

I install the trim, not paint it, but a painter I know recomends Zinsser Bulls Eye shellac to seal the wood. Says it does the trick to hide the joints and seal the wood. "One measurement is worth a thousand expert opinions"
The princeton product is the one that I've used and never see any telegraphing from it. I've used one or two pieces outside too.
I like the profile styles of the Windsor One and they are fairly aggressive selling. I suspect that there would be a way of getting their distributor together with your yards buyers. That's the reason for some of these home shows - to create the demand that makes the lumberyards sit up and take no5tice of new products. I'm always asking about something a year before they start stocking it and giving them a nudge. Another way for you would be to use the website to cantact Windsor and ask who handles it in your area..

The yards I'm talking about are the ones listed on Windsor's website!!!! lol.
I've got a call in to the manager at one of the bigger yards in the area. I'll convince him to carry it somehow, or at least get me what I need.
