I’m installing a factory built fireplace and need to keep the hearth extension (HE) level with the rest (1/2″ cement board, before finish tile) of the floor. R-value for the HE needs to be at least 1.16 and the installation instructions spec a product called USG Micore 300 at 1/2″ thick or a 1/2″ of HX3 or HX4. This is great and will meet my desire to keep the HE even with the cement board except that no one, not even the fireplace retailer or the big box stores seems to know what these products are. Has anyone heard of Micore or the HX3, 4 and if so where they can be found?
TIA,
Mark

Yes, I do .
I have used it . Bet you can search online for it by name. Maybe find dealers for it.
It is a refractory board used in high temp situations. I bought mine thru a stove dealer but know he got it from a refractory supply house that caters to potters and metal casting people.
It does not have a wearing surface, very soft and will have to be covered with something else .
Here is a link to distributor sites from USG

Dovetail,
Thanks! You've put me on the right track. My previous on-line search wasn't very helpful but you've given me some additional search ideas. The plan is to tile over everything, HE and cement board. Appreciate it.

Your likely problem will be that neither the Micore 300 nor the HX3 or 4 will be an adequate tile substrate, and by the time you face the 1/2" heatstop with, say, 1/4" Hardibacker, there goes your height match.
Can you whack out your subfloor there, put some scabs in and go between-joists, and then do the heatstop?
Sometimes I wonder how many folks are as diligent as you, in following installation specifications for these zero-clearance fireplaces.
Gene,
Thanks for the reply. Believe it or not the ever so helpful (sarcasm) retailer actually recommended the cut and scab idea which would work but in this case I think the extra $$ for the product exceeds the time and frustration of the cut and scab; plus I could use 1/4" CB over the whole floor to give me the tile bond on the HE and keep my height match. As to the diligence; I really would hate to have a catastrophy due a few corners cut or $$ saved. In this case it wouldn't be worth it. Appreciate the advise and thanks again,
Mark
