i’ve got a flat roofed rowhouse built around 1900. there’s about 2 feet of crawlspace between the roof and the ceiling below. the ceiling’s insulated with about 3 inches of mineral wool. i’d like to lay some R-14 over the mineral wool, but here’s the rub…
the roof has three skylight vents, but i can’t locate any intake vents. will the skylight vents alone provide enough ventilation to allow more insulation? has anyone encountered similar problems?
thanks for any insight.

Where are you located? If you're in snow country, I'd want to be sure to have sufficient ventilation to prevent ice dams and pooling. Eventually, these will cause failure and leaks.
*What causes ice dams? Is it just improper ventilation or does the warming/freezing cycle cause the water to move up under the shingles?
*i'm in brooklyn, ny. not really snow country, but lots of damp, cold weather. any recommendations for how to vent my flat, old roof?thanks.brian
