Hi y’all, got a sister-in-law (that I really like) who is redoing her laundry room. She wants the 5′ bank of cabinets to have a ‘counter top’ that’s 2 layers, so she can ‘flip’ the top half ‘out’ and have a full 48″ deep surface area for folding laundry. (ie. hinged at the front) Of course she want hinges that don’t show. I have heard about, but never used ‘SOSS’ hinges and wondered if they might work. or if anyone has any other suggestions. No rush, I’ll probably be building it up in Coinneticut when we go up for thanksgiving. Thanx for any advise.

Yes they will work but they are a PITA to put in and they are not cheap. How about a plain old piano hinge?
The Soss hinges will show when it is folded up. And they are not the nices things to be looking on the edge of the counter top. The Soss hinges are used for such applications. But then the hinged end is on the back side, not the front.
Now if you want to get real tricky you can hinge it at the back and then make the bottom piece slide out.
You migth want to look at the "butler table" style of hings. Off hand I don't know how they show from the edge.
But I think that a quality full length piano hinge is the best bet. Either chrome (or SS) or brass depending on the look. Let it be an accent rather than hiding it.
Thanx all, wonder if even piano hinge will take the load. Will disuss it with sis-in-law.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
