Flooring

Rolandfatherof3 | Posted in General Discussion on September 30, 2020 09:34pm

Long story short how would I get the stains out of hardwood flooring so that I can re stain it and is the stain/polyurethane combo a good idea or should I take the time and apply it separately? I let my sister in law stay here with her dog it’s now 15 and pees it’s body weight in urine I used rug doctors for living room rug and when I finally took it up I saw setting stains in floor discoloration of floor stain what can I do that won’t cost a second mortgage to repair it I only bought my house 3 years ago.

Plants overwatered and animal P are tough (near impossible) to make disappear. Depending on the thickness of your flooring, you MIGHT be able to sand it out.

Look up Oxalic acid as sometimes applying that to the area will help.

I have only used oil stain and a separate FLOOR finish, either water or oil based.

Think area rugs if you can’t make the bad disappear.

Thank you i tried a few different stain/poly combos and it just doesn't seem to come out right even the lightest colored stain/poly combos show up almost black am I not sanding enough? I'm just disappointed that I might have to area rug it all because of a dog that is outliving it's time it wasn't good luck and a hand full of pocket change that bought me a home. What brands do you use? And you said Floor Finish? Thank you again for the input

Ps I only tried in small areas to endure it's the look I want so that I'm not constantly starting over

The only solution I'm aware of is to sand to bare wood and treat the entire floor with oxalic acid. This bleaches the wood, providing a uniform base for stain and finish. This might be a job for a pro.

Where do I get the oxalic acid? And was I using the right stuff or are the stain with polyurethane a bad idea?

Thank you I'll see what I can do but hiring companies just isn't in the cards right now what about covering it with click flooring for now? The entire floor I mean

You can absolutely do that, but raising the level of the floor can be an issue with doors, dishwashers, and radiators.

Like I mentioned earlier, I have never used a stain and urethane combo. Beats me if it works. I didn’t even know about it. I’m 71, have worked with wood for 50 yrs, patching, matching and making it look so good you didn’t know I had been there.

Oxalic acid you can google for where you can find it in your area.

Thank constant black coming back is what happens when wet plant pots sit, animals P and the color is set into wood that has a worn or no finish.

“Floor Finish” are latex or polyurethane finishes specially manufactured for flooring. Fabulon Crystal is one latex I’ve had good experience with. Varathane has several urethane floor finishes I have used. Latex dries fast, less smell as it dries. Urethanes stink up the place until fully cured and ventilated.

I use a wide pull T-Bar applicator to apply either. Rolling will leave a stipple finish unless you find a finish meant specifically for rolling.

In areas I couldn’t get out a stain or split boards I would find a good substitute flooring, cut out the bad and replace sections. Store bought or robbed out of another room or a closet or salvage. If too much damage, you could be SOL.

Alright thank you very much I'll see what I can do
