Definatly laid like a deck using 16d nails as spacers. Your husband is right. T&G will warp after enough rains

If you choose T&G, it should be sealed all six surfaces before installation.
I would use IPE', or PAU LOPE' ironwoods or clear vertical grain fir which is the old time standard for these decks. Search the archives here on this subject. We've just discussed it to death.
In your area Cypress might be a viable choice.
Excellence is its own reward!
Andy or anyone,
Any comment on the pavillion-like porch FHB March 99, page 100? Beautiful circular porch. The article talks about the roof, rather than the deck, but from what I can see it's not pt with spacers. Any guesses on the materials or methods? I have something similar to this in a design, and I of course want the best result. Want a little more upscale than pt.
I installed VG Doug Fir T & G, square edges over joists on a large entry porch and an open gazebo at a 10K sf luxury home for a commercial builder. His own home. We installed it like a floor with all sides primed. We sanded it like a floor after installation to prepare it for paint . It had a drained concrete basin under the porch to keep moisture away. They did their homework on this one. Cypress was also a consideration, but it was more difficult to aquire. Most of those big porches in the southern mansions are made of Cypress. GW
Greg, interesting point about the concrete drain basin! Thanks.
The entire underside of this wrap around porch was concrete. This guy has alot of money. We installed a 21K dollar medallion in their entry. Then the designer came in and covered 95% of it with area rugs. Thant's pretty decadent. GW
