I need help in picking out flooring that can be used in a kitchen where water is likely to be spilled on it. We would like to use wood or a laminate if possible. Will these options hold up if water is spilled on them? Are there specific brands, models or finishes that would be the more durable? A consideration is that I would like to install myself if possible. Thank you.

A wood floor with several coats of durable finish (oil) will hold up well.
Not to 5 gallons of water, or liquids not cleaned up right away and if you have lottsa kids and animals ceramic might be a wiser choice.
I hate laminate floors.

if you are carefull to clean up spilled water right away, wood does fine, and most lams tolerate a drop or three, but if you are anticipating kids and carelessness or leaking dishwashers, then the Formica brand lam is your only choice.
