Customer has his heart set on flourescent can lights in the kitchen. Should I push the dedicated fluorescent cans or go with regular IC cans and a compact flourescent bulb? (He said he didn’t care if the bulb poked out of the recess). I’m not sure how hot the miniballast gets on the comp fluor; is it enough to kick off the thermal protection? Also, how well do the fluorescent dimmers hold up? Thanks alot.

Go with ordinary cans and CFL retrofits. See TCI retrofits at http://www.efi.org, they can be put in Juno and Halo cans. Advantage of retrofits: the ballast can be changed by swapping out the retrofits, rather than having to approach from above.
