Has anyone tried the fluorescent worklights that Amazon offers?
Fluorescent Work Light – Cool Operator – 130 watt
More expensive than halogen, but you wouldn’t burn your hand touching them or have to wait for them to cool down enough to stow in the van. (of course, they would be of no use for force-drying drywall mud and paint the way you can with those halogen heat-rays.)

I have an awesome jobsite light that I'd love to recommend to you but cant remember the manufacturer / name. Purchased at Home Depot, its a big retractable tube on a tripod that projects light 360 degrees. Way more durable than those halogen lights we all break all the time. It also folds up and retracts into a very portable tube. It has a powder coated look / finish and looks like a missile launcher or bazooka.
Its awesome.
Tim Uhler posted here awhile back praising those 'bobble-lights', can't think what they're called, but the ones that you can knock around on the jobsite. Said he loves 'em, and they work real good. I'll see if I can find some more info for ya.

I bought one of the wobble lights about two months ago from amazon and love it. They are a little pricey ($150-$250 for the big ones) but IMO well worth it.

We got our wobble lights today. We bought 2 175 Metal Halide units. It takes about 5 minutes to warm up. These things put out light! It is a nicer color light than halogen or flourescent. We had 2 going today to put in a barrel ceiling and it really made it nice.
Here are a couple of pics. One shows a room without the light, then with the light and the last pic is of the light itself. I hope this helps.

I love my wobble light, but it's impractical to haul around all the time. Great for jobs I'll be on for a couple days, or weeks, but most of the time I use $5 clamp lights.
