I am wondering the best way and/or code requirements for stairwell headers that the stringers attach to the joists, in which the joists are manufactured I joists?
Any help appreciated.

I'm framing a basement and want to frame and drywall 2 HVAC central distribution ducts that run in parallel across the middle of the basement. The ducts are suspended such that the bottom of the ducts are about a foot from the joists and both ducts together are about four feet wide. Seems to me my choices are 2x2, 2x4, or plywood to box around the ducts. Are there other options? What I'm looking for is the best structure that would support the drywall and take up the least space.

Hi Randy,
Manufactured I joists are normally designed for each site and should have the manufacturers recommendations regarding any opennings as you describe. Contact the supplier for a copy of their recommendations. Most codes support the manufacturers guidelines and the hangers required.
