I already use and like them, but some free ones are good, too.

    Thanks!

cheers mate!  I just bought an Irwin set and liked the blade.  I'll be getting my replacement blades in 10-12 weeks!

I did that a while ago, sent off for free blades.  It took a LONG time but I did get 'em.  I like the Lenox Gold better.

I'm surprised so many folks still use utility knives with that type blade.  I switched to those snap blades a few years ago and only use my utility knife for hook blades.

To each their own, I guess.Tipi, Tipi, Tipi!

In my woodworking I still use the Stanley 199 non retractable.  It clamps the blade in hard and it doesn't wobble.  Those things have been around forever.

In my carpentry work and most day to day I use the retractable.  I always carry the new line of folding utility knife as a pocket knife.  Best pocket knife I ever owned, just replace the blade.

Those Lenox golds are the kind. They hold up nice. I use 'em to score metal studs when cutting and they still last a long time.                            Mike

The Lenox Gold blades are fine, the knife (handle, holder what do we call it?) stinks. mine broke in no time. Nice white handle looking thang, but stinks.

Yeah I can see mine failing sometime, nothing like the old stanley, as Jer mentions                            Mike

Not to belabor a seamingly minor point - but what is this kind of  cheap metal, is it die cast or some crap alloy. I like the knife design and function.

Would well designed tools cost that much more if made with quality materials. I find this type of metal in all sorts of quality manufacturers - DeWalt, Delta, etc. I'll pay more - I just want it to last!

          2. ruffmike | Jun 22, 2006 06:51am | #13

Not sure of the material, but it probably has a lot to do with the quality of the die or molds also. Too bad because I like the feel of the knife and the ease of changing the blade.

Stanley seems to have the same problem with the quality of their ergonomic (sp?) and quick open knives. They just don't last.

Something to be said about the good ol' 199. Classic design, kind of like how some rockers seek out the old plumb axes at flea markets (even though no one nails off anymore) ; ^ )                            Mike

I love the Lennox gold too. Best utility knife blade I've used so far.

      Rock the Tipi!
