Jay,
about half the time when I dig that flex stuff up it is crushed (and that's BEFORE I hit it with my tools). I work in drainage of expansive clay soils, and it is my thought that the shrinking and swelling of the soils has something to do with it. The rigid PVC stuff works just fine without any distortion over 25 to 30 years (that's as old as my first system, so I don't know how long it will last)

I wonder if the solution is to backfill all of the pipe, all the way to daylight or drywell, with gravel covered with filter fabric. If the pipe fails, the gravel drain should still work just fine. Be sure to slope and compact the bottom of the trench so water can flow.
