Ok …I,m building a front porch portico or porch 5′ X 8′ using 6×6 pt posts attached to cement anchors going up with the deck rim joists let into the posts. The top of the posts is notched like an upside down T to let in the 2×6’s which are sandwhiched with ply-w to bring out the 5 1/2″ width. To attach the other ends to the house what is the best way? Bolt a ledger to rim joist and bring the outside 2×6 into the house rime joist and nail into the end of the ledger then use anchors to attach the rest of the beam? Just use anchors straight into the ledger? Don’t use a ledger and use anchors into the house rim joist?
Also the roof pitch will be 9/12 using 2×6 and i would like to just use collar ties 1/3 up to allow for an elipse ceiling using bead board. I could use some ideas and suggestions. thanks!
The span between the posts is 8′ . Should the rafters be 2×8 with the collar ties no more than 1/3 up from the top of the post? Since there will be no ceiling joists due to the elipse arch going as high as the collar ties. An 8′ span should be 2×8 at least. Would 2×6 be suffient for the roof truss or should i use 2×8’s?

Just get the right size Simpson hanger to fit the 5-1/2" beam you are making up.

I wouldn't worry about using a 2x6 rafter. I would prefer the 2x8 rafter.
We get snow here, not sure if you do. Thats would be my deciding factor in lumber sizing.
Fill out your profile.

Sizing a rafter depends on the span.In this case 5', 4', or at the most, 8', depending on the style and layout. A 2x6 will take one heck of a snow load at that

My brevity in my post didn't clarify much.
Span does dictate rafter sizing, I said depending on snow would be my deciding factor, I should have added for your span of 8'. I was in a hurry and left that part out.
Thanks for the correction.

yo - there is really a bunch of info missing to answer the Q about roof framing for certain.
I am assuming that this portico is running 8' along the house and five feet out, and that you are doing it with a cross gable orientation to the existing so that there is a ridge running perpenddicular to the existing roof. That leaves the rafteers spnning only half of the 8' - a four foot rafter span.
if this is right, the ridge an easily be a ridge beam - structrual - instead of a ridge board and you can put the ties anywhere you want. It is a short ridge - no more than about 7-8 feet depending on pitch of existing.
