I have installed 1.5 inch foamboard into the recess’s of the 8 cavities of the 7 x 9 foot metal garage door. I’m looking for suggestions as to what I could use for the interior liner to cover the insulation and door frame to provide a finished appearance while still holding the insulation in place. Weight is a concern as to type of liner. I’d appreciate any and all of your recommendations.
Thank You!

Will 1/8" three-ply luan work for you? It can be put on with a small bead of urethane glue, and stitched up with small panhead sheet metal screws.
Of prime importance in keeping heat in a garage, your side and top seal strips need to be effective, as well as the bottom gasket between door and floor.
Handling the air infiltration is probably more important than adding the insulation.
Yeah, the thinnest possible plywood or hardboard. Or thin sheet metal. Install wood blocks (in place of the foam) along the ends and occasionally down the length, and screw into them from both sides, in addition to glue.
The Menards store by me sells garage door insulation kits that are rigid foam insulation wrapped in some type of white vinyl or plastic. One kit does a 9' x 7' door for about $40. I would need two kits for my garage door so the price is a little steep. On the plus side, I wouldn't have to mess around with trying to make it look good or add a lot of extra weight to the door (which is kinda flimsy to start with).
By the time you figure in everything, I doubt that you could do it much cheaper another way, unless you can make use of scrap.
