I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of electric garage door openers? My 7 year old Sears opener works with the wired buttons but not the remote controls. I’ve replace the batteries in both remotes to no avail. Is there something I can do or am I at the end of the life expectancy of the unit? Any thoughts?

Chris-
The first two things I would check would be that the antenna is still on the opener and that the remotes are still programmed to the opener. There is usually a short piece of wire on the outside of the opening mechanism that I believe acts as an antenna. If that is still connected, then there is usually a way to reprogram the remote from the opener. Look in the owners manual or maybe on the back of the unit itself. I'm no expert but openers are pretty simple mechanisms. Good luck, and hope this helps.
*If you open and close your door a lot then 7 years is doing good. Before I would replace the unit I would check to see if the remote is operational. Sometimes the switch button wears out. Sears sells replacements. If you can find a knowledgable sales person they can check out the remote for you in the store.
*My mother's Sears unit gave up the ghost last year after about 20 years and could not be revived as no replacement circuit board was available. I purchased a small receiver unit with two remotes that was plugged into the AC on the opener motor housing and then had the control wires connect to the two terminal screws that connect to the wires for the the in-garage push button. I don't remember where I got it or how much it cost, but it was considerably less expensive than a new garage door opener. Replacement circuit boards should be available for the newer units, however, and it is usually a pretty simple job to remove the old circuit board and plug in a new one.
