We installed a zero-clearance gas fireplace in a new house and the owner complains that it gets too hot. They say that around the box and on top, it gets hot to the touch and turns off the TV and VCR on top. The contractor that installed it could not find anything wrong with it. Any ideas? Thanks

Were the clearances specified by the manufacturer followed?
*you might find that a fan unit install over the firebox will keep the heat from building up. My own unit has a optional fan kit controled by the heat. Works great!
*Yes, the box is wood framed and sheetrocked and is about 4' wide by 4' high. We cantilevered the floor out the side of the house. The inspector signed off on it. We also built several others in the plat the same way, but have not had the same problems.
*How does the flame compare on this one as opposed to the others? It seems entirely possible that the one unit is overfired (too big a flame) which would increase heat output. In my area, it is, er, "difficult" (read "impossible") to find a gas fireplace installer/mechanic who has much idea about what he/she's doing.
