In my remodel I have to remove plaster from a chimney. The chimney was concealed behind a plaster wall. In other words they plastered right onto the chimney. The base blaster looks to be the same mortar as the joint mortar for the chimney brick, and seems to adhere just as well. Any suggestions as to how, other than chiselling, to get it off?

I asked this a few months ago.
I got laughed out of the forums. ;o)
(So, yea, your best bet is a chisel...)
Bummer.
A pneumatic needle scaler might work, but really, that's a lot like chiseling.
Pnuematic chisel or SDS-type drill equipped with a chisel. The finish coat you may be able to soften/destroy with water, but base coat plasters are usually pretty tough.
Are you just trying to expose the brick, or is this a chimney repair where the idea is "get to the chimney, do the repair, and re-plaster"? If it's the later... use a big hammer and chisel, and just repair the brick that gets damaged... Reminds me of many tortuous jobs I've had to do where tearing out/throwing away would have been a lot quicker/cheaper... but for various reasons was not the allowable approach.
Should have also suggested an angle grinder with good masonry blade. This can work well, but can make a pretty unmanageable amount of dust...
