I’m using Armstrong swiftlock laminate flooring in a kitchen remodel. When is it okay to go over the old vinyl instead of tearing up the old floor first? I know the manufacturer says its okay to go over sound vinyl that isn’t peeling up or anything. The existing vinyl floor is curled at a few edges, has a couple of tears or dents about the size of a quarter, but otherwise seems in decent shape. The customer seems to like the idea of tearing up the old floor first, but he doesn’t really care so long as the finished product looks good and is installed properly. I guess my major hesitation is that the vinyl floor could be really difficult to remove. But on the other hand, I don’t want the new floor to be compromised by the old vinyl. . .
Any suggestions, ideas?

wang, I have installed more pergo floor than i care to remember. You will probably be all right by leaving the old vinyl in place. One thing to remember, if you do decide to tear off the old floor, you have to make sure that the floor is reasonably flat. This is especially inportant with the swift lock floor.
dont forget the kneepads!!!!
thanks,
I took the old vinyl off. The subfloor was in good shape and reasonably flat so the installation went well. Next time, I'll just go over the old vinyl. It just didn't work out that way this time.
