I am a High School shop teacher and I learned what I know about framing back when everything was framed wtih 2x4s. I do finish carpentry in the summer months to pay the bills but now I want to put an addition on my house and want to update my framing knowledge. Can anyone recommend a good book on framing basics? I saw 2 that were listed in Fine Homduilding: Precision Framing by Guertin and Arnold; and The Very Efficient Carpenter by Larry Haun. Are either of these any good?

Precision Framing is a good one. The Very Efficient Carpenter is more about production techniques.... a good read but maybe not what you are looking for.
JLC's "Advanced Framing" is pretty good too. It's a collection of articles about framing that have been published in the Journal over the years.
Also highly recommended is "Roof Cutter's Secrets". It's not just about roofs, it covers rake walls and other basics as well and is very well written. It rides in the door pocket of my truck at all times. I re-read it about once a year.
T, you can check to see if your library has the Larry Haun on DVD, the taunton series of DVD's is very cool. There are 3 on framing, just as an extra. Im not a framer so I learned a lot from them.
I really like Precision Framing and also Rough Framing by Mark Currie http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0934041865/qid=1104210252/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-7514751-4723058?v=glance&s=books It is more prodoction oriented, but has a lot of great tips, good pictures and I think the basics are explained very well. Between those two books, just about everything is covered.
I second Will Holladay's book.
Thanks for the help. Tell me more about Will Holladay's book. What is the name of it?
