When your buying granite, do you ever pay for the scrap s.f.? The place I ordered my counters from came and measured, made templates. The fabricator tried to minimize the seams, so there’s going to be more waste from the slab. Instead of just paying for my counter square footage they added about 10sf because of the waste. Is this normal?
Talking to a few counter places I was under the impression I only pay for the counter square footage.
This seems fishy.

Most of them would give you a rough price per sq.ft. but the actual pricing depends on a lot of factors. Or you can say the price per sq.ft. is a guide to compare different grades.
There is always going to be waste and depends on how useful the cut off piece is to them they would factor that into the pricing as well.
To answer your question a 10 sq.ft. surcharge is not unusual at all.
U buy the slab.
the whole slab.
not like they have much of a use for your particular off cuts, huh?
nothing "fishy" ... just a real world application of a natural material.

How many sf is your counter?
I did a kitchen remodel for a client last year, and she had to go to the stone yard and select 3 ful slabs. Two were almost completely used up, the third had a piece about 30" x 9 ft left over so she had it delivered and stored in the back yard for possible future use.
If your 10 sf is a nice size piece, ask them to bring it out to the house. maybe you could make your own cofee table with it. Or pay a few more bucks and have them cut it into small pieces and make several cutting boards that you can give to family and friends for Christmas.

Are we talking about a price that went up after they quoted it to you?
I've never heard of a place only charging for what you needed out of the slab.
around here you pay for the slab

Not sure of the question. Are you asking if a disposal surcharge for the scrap cutoffs is customary? or that they should give you a credit for your leftover scrap from the slab?
My experience has been...they [the fabricators] quote on a job by job basis.
Now if you are using a big box or some such, as a broker, and they say so much $ sq/ft installed, well don't blame the sub for the final price difference.
