Everyone,
As part of a kitchen remodel, we’re going to be installing a tile kitchen backsplash. Right now, the walls are bare. Is there any benefit to using greenboard instead of drywall behind the backsplash? We’re getting ready to sheetrock the walls now, so it would be just as easy to put greenboard up as drywall in that area. I want to know if its worthwhile or if there is any negative with using the greenboard.
Thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. A backsplash doesn't really get any water and I've tiled over regular drywall many times. Although, techniquely, what you suggest is exactly what the greenboard is for.
I'd grout it and seal the bottom where it meets the countertop.
Why not cement board? At least in the area behind the sink where puddles may form.
It wouldn't hurt, but not necessary at all. A kitchen backsplash seldom gets fully wet, just an occasional splash

I definitely wouldn't bother. Green board is more brittles and doesn't hold up as well. I only use it where it's mandated by code. Never on ceilings!
Not that it's a big deal, but there is a negative with greenboard (you asked). Greenboard is about 2/3 as strong as regular wallboard. That's one reason it's not sold in 3/8" thick boards.
Guys,
Thanks so much for the responses. That's great information. I'll go with regular drywall.

I've never seen tile applied with thinset falling off cement board. Can't say the same for any application over sheetrock of any kind.
If you are building for it to hold up over the long term there's no doubt I'd use hardi or another cement based board.
Even if the kitchen wall never gets wet from kitchen activities, it's impossible to keep the tile in tact if moisture ever enters the wall from above. An entire kitchen can be rerocked for less than what some backsplash tile installs go for.
Having said that, if the installation will be torn out and remodeled in a dozen years maybe it doesn't matter what is used.

Go with Hardiboard or wonderbard
With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise Him in the midst of the throng. For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them from those who would condemn them to death.
