In rechargeables, for driving screws (or threaded fasteners generally) what functional differences exist between a drill with its hammer functiion engaged and one of the impact drivers?
Appreciate that the drill has a keyless chuck vs the quick change hex bit holder. Seems that the impact driver is more compact. For the general screwdriving/setting fasteners that I want to do is an impact driver the way to go?
Does the impact driver have something that the hammer drill doesn’t? At first glance, seems to me they both do the same thing (drive a screwdriver bit with impacts/hammer).

Hi Dunc1,
They are two totally different beasts.
The hammer drill adds a motion to the rotation of the bit in a direction parallel with the bit. The motion is kind of like a tiny reciprocating motion. which bumps the hammerdrill bit up and down slightly in the masonry which makes the drilling more efficient.
An impact driver adds an impact to the bit but in the direction that the bit turns, or perpendicular to the bit. It works kind of like a hammer knocking the driver bit and screw around thousands of times a minute.
If you tried to drive a screw with the hammerdrill set to hammer mode you couldnt do it.
An impact driver is great for driving screws except that most don't have a variable clutch. You have to kind of learn to feel the drill and screw better. The advantage of an impact is that the impact force turning in the direction of the screw helps to keep the driver bit from stripping most screws and 'camming out' it also adds a lot of force for driving large screws and small lag bolts.
Compare the inch pounds of torque between an 18 volt cordless drill and a 12 volt cordless impact driver.
Hope this helps.

Wooooweee! Lot of fancy talk in his reply. Did he just say that one hammers and the other twists?

Actually....."impacts and DRIVES" ....that way the tool names are indeed self explanatory.
