Question:What is the best way to produce a hand-planed finish on S4S Douglass Fir beams already installed? I would appreciate it if the answer included strategies for getting into tight corners as well as for working next to other vulnerable surfaces, i.e. plaster, smooth wood, wall paper, etc. I speak of a natural planed surface with low ridges and depressions, not a decoratively scooped surface or a scalloped adze look. Bidding this at a reasonable price is a must, so appropriate techniques cannot take forever. Job scope is 3000 sq. feet.

A hand planed finish at a reasonable price on beams already installed ? ho ho ho. The reasonable price went out the window when the beams were installed before planing and then protecting. I realize that you are probably coming into an existing structure for an update/remodel, but this is just tedious hand work and scaffold building. You can find every hand plane you will need for the job at:

Did you ever consider sanding instead ? Did you do a sample ?
*"Bidding this at a reasonable price is a must"Look in the dictionary under "oxymoron." I think you'll see a drawing of this very project being "bid at a reasonable price"
*Jeff, Start off with a good quality hand power planer. I like Bosch but whatever brand you like. One or two passes will get you 99% of the area probably. A baker type scaffold or any scaffold on wheels will expedite the work. The tricky or should I say time consuming part is the 1+% that truely needs to be done by hand. A sharp bull nose plane is handy here or you can always use a slick or 2" framing chisel. Feather in from the power plane stop and you should be okay. The final look is what is important. So use a good eye and you will be okay.walk gooddavid
