Hardi Plank help!

| Posted in General Discussion on May 12, 2001 01:49am

Hey guys help me out here. I have installed plenty of clap but have yet to install fiber cement. How much more should I charge more than the normal wood clap. I also have heard of two ways to deal with the seams. One way was to toe nail up through the bottom, into the joining clap pre drilled with a finish screw. Then I also heard to just face nail with a finish nail. Whats up?

Toe nail up to the ....? I must have misunderstood your question. On all the clap up to 9" you dont need to face nail unless it is pooching out a great deal. when you work with the clap over 9" it is a good idea to face nail it down, That is, a nail in the top that is hidden under the preceding course and a nail in the bottom no closer than a 1/4 " from the edge. YOu will see the nail but 12" clap will catch a wind. Dont countersink!!! flush or just proud. countersinking weaken the holding power. Seams are just caulked. no need to make the seams tight..hardi does expand and contract. I like to leave a 3/32 space. good luck

*The hardi site has some good installation info (http://www.jameshardie.com/hardiplankinstallation.htm) and fastening/cost have come up here before. I'm about to start my firt job, too, and am trying both Maze double-dipped galv. siding nails and Swan Secure ss siding screws (both intended for Hardiplank).Add'l Q: Does/has anyone use the thin fanfold foam insulation as underlayment, to compensate for wavy sheathing?

*How much are you guy's getting per square?

        1. Robert_Adair | Apr 24, 2001 05:00am | #4

*Here in Idaho we are getting 1.50sf

*I have a builder who wants to pay me .85 per square ft. for labor.

*I did a wicked custom...over 2.00 per square and never that low again.near the stream counting openings and corners much more carefully,ajMaybe a 1.50 for claps only...all trim extra..ale facia..soffets and porches..extra...

*Ron,At .85 per sf, walk away from it. I hung plenty of it and believe you me, it is not worth it for that price. You should be able to take in 1.50 - 2.00 per sf.The stuff is a bear to work with, heavy, hard on your tools and you. For .85 per sf, you're way better off hangning vinyl or even cedar.Pete

*I think I need to move. I hang nothing but fiber-cement siding and I would jump at .85/sf. For basic new construction I get about .75/sf for 8" siding plus extra's. Some specialty can range up to 2.00/sf, but that is some pretty spectacular stuff. I think you can make money at .85/sf even if you've not hung fiber-cement siding before. But, each market is different, get all the money you can, until you get use to it, it can be a pain to install.

*I am using 1/4" fanfold to take the hardi out to approximately the same depth as the clap I am removing. My roofing supply center termed the fanfold "leveling board" which I always associated with 4x8 foam sheets. Check out Cemplanks web site - their installation docs are also pretty good.

*Our association just completed residing 100 condo units in Sun Valley Idaho, it came out great! we did not caulk the planks after seeing a messy or silghtly messy caulk job. even if wiped up it shows after painting. better to let it be what it is..
