How do the clips look when viewed from below?? Do they hook the bottom edge of the plank and are visible from the bottom edge. Do they create a gap? How much were they approx?? Sounds good if they aren’t obtrusive. I will be installing Hardiplank on a new garage this summer by myself.

I used the clips on my house. They are barely noticable once painted. The clip stops short of the face of the siding. There is no gap. They kept perfect alignment. The siding stayed level all the way up two story walls. They really saved a lot of time. I can't remember how much they cost but they were well worth the expense.
*Regarding clips with the Hardi-Plank...I have used a simple job site made clip to help hold the siding in place to be nailed. Simple take a 3inch piece of metal banding material and bend it into a "S" shape with the distance you want as the overlap. Make several of these clips and place them the top of the siding to receive the next piece. After nailing a couple of nails to hold the new piece, side out the "S" clips and contiue nailing. This works for if you are blind nailing and standard nailing the siding. Try it .... you will like it!!!! Fast and easy. Oh, don't forget to check your level every couple of runs. This will help you keep the siding looking great.

First, much thanks to Ted Weyman who provided me with the "yikes" approach to my question on cedar siding and caulking. I am on track (I think) to remove my existing 59 year old, 10 coats of paint siding and replace with Hardi-Plank or similar.
Thought I would pass along to this great group some info I received on alignment clips for Hardi siding that not everybody might be aware of. The contractor who visited me this AM was not, so I figure others might also be in the same boat. JH Hardi's help desk provided this to me when I asked if this could be a one person job. Aligning clips for fiber-cement siding are manufactured by Simplicity Tool Corporation, Portland, Oregon, Phone 503-253-2000, Fax 503-253-2009. They distribute around the country but you have to call to find out who/where.
Clips hang over the top of each board, give the recommended 1-1/4" lap, and are hidden by the lap on subsequent boards. Clips are 1" wide, 24 gauge, galvanized and primed.
