Hardwood install in a mid-stair landing

I have a nearly completely open mid-stair landing that currently has carpet on it. The stairs are hardwood and there is no hardwood under the carpet. I’d like to install hardwood at that landing, but there isn’t a place to put any expansion joint. I’m looking for ANY advice on how best to install hardwood at this location: which direction would you run the wood, now to install the last piece with limited to no quarter round to hide a gap, how to finish it, how to keep kids and husband from ruining the finish (ha ha)..ect

You need to keep a consistent rise at step to landing and landing to next step down.
Have you pulled the carpet back and found? (A recess from the perimeter oak nosing?)
