Just wondering. I watched the flooring company install the hardwood in a roughly $750K house (THats a fairly heafty buck where I live) & I noticed the rolls of Kraft type paper sitting in the corner not being put under the hardwood.
Is that stuff not required? Every other job I have seen they use it although I don’t really know why. I have seen it not used on a small area like next to the wall where they glue every piece down because they couldnt really nail it.
I am not a flooring installed myself & I’m curiuos about it. I have seen this particular company (new to the site I work on) on other sites & wasnt really impressed by the huge air bubbles & lack of glue under their vinyl flooring jobs.
Just like to hear what the proper way to install hardwood is & what the purpose of the paper is.
Thanks
Ted

The bottom of the floor boards rubbing against the sub-floor will, over time, develop an annoying squeak. Rosin paper, not kraft paper, prevents that. -- Jim
That'll be an expensive sqeak to fix!

I've seen the rosin paper omitted when the whole floor was glued down with flexible constuction adhesive...no squeaks with that stuff. Either way, the rows adjacent to the wall should be face nailed (think nail hole filler), as well as glued.
glue, red rosin paper or felt paper are acceptable.
No paper or glue = lazy or stupid or both.

I installed 2,900 s.f. 3" wide red oak flooring in my house . I did not use rosin paper it was one more layer for the radiant floor heat to go thru. Two and one half years no squeaks.
Let them guys work on other houses and not yours. They are cutting costs

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Rosin paper under anything up to 3 1/2" flex glue, without paper remember, a must for any width above.
Everyone has their different methods. I've found "what works best and stick with it" Installers will do everything different one way or another depending on what part of the country you reside. Rosin paper versus #15 asphalt felt paper? That's seems to be the tug of war all over. The NWFA(National Wood Flooring Assoc) recommends #15 as rosin paper doesn't hold up over time. Personally I don't see how rosin paper can suppress squeaks because it's so thin, compared to felt paper.

Hey, I hear all this talk about rosin paper, but apparantly you can't buuy it in sw arkansas. Does anybody know of a supplier. I'm needing something to put on a plywood subfloor to keep the sheetrockers from making a mess. Any suggestions? Would rosin paper be a good choice? Is it expensive?
This has to be a joke.
Two things, cuts down on moisture and any squeeks. I find felt to be the best.
