i normally wear a baseball cap outside.
lately it doesn’t seem to be keeping the sweat out of my eyes.
long time ago i use to use an old (clean) diaper for a sweatband.
what do use use? hat, half-hat (visor), bandana, sweatband, or ?

bobl- I'm glad the diaper was clean...........
We all wear baseball hats but it doesn't help the sunburn on the neck, unless you turn it around like a catcher, but then you get a white stipe across your forehead from the adjustment strap.
Everyone around here is to vain to wear a straw hat, but Ive got to tell you it it sure would keep the sun from frying the back of my neck.
Guess we'll just keep putting ice cubes in our baseball hats..........:-)

I use the square rag that came with the Bosch hammer on my head and hold it on with a baseball cap for work outside. That takes care of the sun on the neck problem.
Right now I'm sistering ceiling joists in the attic, so there's no sun problem but much more sweat. I always have a hand towel around my neck, it takes about 3 or 4 per day. They get totally soaked. Because I'm looking down much of the time, I have to keep stopping to wipe the water off the inside of my glasses

Having had a few things burnt off my bald head has absolutely convinced me to wear some kind of hat no matter what it looks like. Age has some benefits too, at my age the vanity factor is much less so I wear a straw one. Watch the brim size though or you will keep knocking it off working in 16" framing.

Jack;
I've been waiting to get a pic for you;
This is my framer in 100 degree plus heat, banging away...claims he has 5 straw hats, and loves them...
Thanks for the pix. Except for the age and waist size, he looks just like me in that hat.

Too vain to wear a straw hat, but willing to wear a baseball hat baclwards?
What on earth is this world coming to? {G,D&R}
In my humble, aged opinion, the only people who can wear a baseball hat backwards without making fools of themselves are those who wear their trousers halfway down their butts but are too smart to appear in public in either state of dress. {G}

Baseball hats and there various clones. You have to look at the material they are made from and what is the sweat band in the hat made of. The cheap givaway hats as well as many of the cheap logo branded hats are made of synthetic materials that do a poor job of absorbing the sweat so it will run down into your eyes when the hat is rapidly saturated. Also what is used to stiffen the bill is important. If it will absorb the sweat or if it is non absorbing then only the material around it can hold the sweat and will become rapidly saturated. I prefere a cotton hat for maxium sweat absorption. There are many wool blend hats out there and the less wool in them less absorbing they are. If the bill of the hat will hold the shape you like than most likley it is a fiber product that looks like cardboard. If the bill stiffnner is plastic than it will not hold its shape as well and will not absorb the sweat as well either. They can also be cleaned in the top rack of the dishwasher. Some synthetic materials will wick sweat away rapidly for easy evaporation. but these are expensive and hard to find.
diaper, huh?
I'm sure that if I tried that around here, the guys would be hollerin' "hey S--t Head!"
But there sure does seem to be a lot of sweat in the air this summer. I've gone back to my youthful days and switched from ball cap to bandana.
I'd wear it as a headband, but for some reason my scalp seems to sunburn a lot more easily than it used to. So, I go pirate style, but I put a terry band in the fold that goes across my forehead and that helps a bunch.
Arg! Mateys, got the afternoon off.
I've worn farm hats basically since I could walk. I feel naked outside without one on.
By "farm hat", I mean the baseball style hats that seed corn companies and such give away. Farmers don't buy hats, just like carpenters don't buy pencils. It just ain't done.
It kinda aggravates me that most hats now seem to be the solid top, instead of mesh. The mesh ones are a lot cooler in hot weather.
These hats are good for a lot of things. Keeping the sun out of your eyes, swatting horseflies, sliding down over your eyes while napping, etc.

For work, I wear a headband that James DuHamel gave me.
It has gel beads captured inside of it. Soak that in ice water for a couple minutes, and you have an icy headband for hours.
It also soaks up all the sweat. In my case, that is saying a LOT.

You should ask Vince about his doo-rag. It won't be the same as if you had been there at Petefest.<G>
This is a subject right up my alley. I have examined my geneological history and have discovered that I am a direct descendent of the ancient Roman carpenter, Perspirus Prolificas. I have had good success with the extra heavy duty tennis sweatbands that are available at the Sports Authority stores here in Florida. They are almost all cotton and can hold a ton of sweat. I can go through three or four in a day, but I just ring them out, hang them in the sun, and they're ready to go again. In addition, I use a military Hot Weather Sun Hat like the one's you see on the troops in Iraq. I picked mine up at an Army-Navy store and it has several nice features. First, it has a brim all the way around so both the eyes and the neck are protected. Second, it absorbs some sweat that gets past the sweatband, but is waterproof for the rain showers that spring up on almost a daily basis. And third, the hats are sized so getting a perfect fit is no problem. Hope this helps.
Military sun hat...

Bandana...pirate style on the really humid days, catches most of the sweat. Most of the time it's my Bosch Power Tools ball cap or a Cat diesel ball cap. I also keep a hand towel around my neck for the real smokers!
Those gel bead things you can wrap around your neck after putting them in the freezer really does help for a few hours. My wife turned me onto them. She and all her tennis friends have always used them (poor things...lol).
Personally I just keep a bandana in my back pocket and wipe the shvitz off my face when ever I'm soaked.
Diaper????? Bwahahahaha
Be asking for it.....nahhhh

I tried one on once and it was great. Unfortunately, too expensive for my budget at the time, and no great need for it as I was out of the trades. I would think an insert in a cap would be a good seller, as the top of the head is usu the first place the sun hits. Hmmm, frozen peas would work; add some btr, S&P, freeze, put on your head and secure w/your cap; after a while, there's a veggie snack!
Where does your DW get hers? IIRC, these don't freeze solid so remain malleable; pack an extra in the lunch cooler.
I like the style of a full brim like Luka posted but am partial to bb caps. I used to carry sweat bands for my head and wrists. My fave hat was thin white cotton, worn to its death.
Don't forget sunscreen, regardless of the hat!
You can make your own bandanas with those gel beads for little dinero. Check for the crystals in the gardening section of a good nursery. They are used to hold water in soil. I think it is also similar to the absorbent material used in diapers, which by the way is also similar to the material used in contact lenses. It is a long chain starch/carbohydrate that when moisturized is > 90% water (ever seen a contact lens when it has dried out completely?) Anyway, buy some cheap bandanas at Wal-Mart put a teaspoon of the stuff in a folded bandana, and sew them up in such a fashion that you can tie the ends around your head or neck. Soak them in cold water for twenty minutes, and you'll have a cool rag all day as it evaporates. You will still need another rag to wipe with though.
Thanks! Great idea :-)
I always have my dark blue cotton cap with Matt's old house in small letters on the back. we don't have many days over 95 I like the visor to keep dust out of my eyes, and to protect my nogin when I hit it on something I didn't see and the pencil fits well too. When it's really cold I add a large wool hat.
Even us ladies in the Texas sun wear a baseball cap, I have a couple of denium ones that work great. And I keep a hand towel thru the one belt loop of my pants for the sweat that escapes the hat. The ponytail protects the neck from the sun, unless I know am using the router, in which case it gets shoved up in side the hat and we pray for an overcast day.
Not a lot you can do but pray for 70 degree weather to hurry up and get here!

I just got back from vacation in central Oregon (near Bend) and last week it was 103°! I wore a straw hat everyday.
Here is a link to the hat I wear at work everyday the sun comes out. I still wear sunscreen everyday, whether I wear the hat or not.
I don't have a pic with me wearing the hat. I look pretty dumb, but it sure makes a difference.

I just let it run down my face, & wipe it off with the back of my hand. That way, I really look like I'm working hard.
When I get the chance, I play tennis in the morning, and use baseball caps to soak up the sweat. I use the same hats for working.
I buy my hats 10 for a buck when the local silk screen company clears out their stock. I buy only cotton hats with good sweat bands, and keep a half dozen in the back of the truck, and swap it out with a dry one when it's soaked. Which can be often. I also use Ironclad gloves with the terrycloth sewed on the web between thumb and forefinger, which works great.
Usually baseball cap, regardless of weather. Really hot days, where hat won't hold the sweat, I'll fold a paper towel to about 2" x 8" and stick inside the hat. It goes around the front half, as an additional sweat band. Will work for an hour to a half day, depending on how much sweat is involved. Occasionally a bandanna pirate style with hat on top.
Always try to have a bandanna available for wiping as needed.
Sunscreen for the neck.
If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
The big straw hats that look like something you would see in a rice patty are the best. Most people would rather get sunburns than look stupid. Skin cancer is real. I get the most spf sunblock I can find (45) and put it on every day. I have several boonie style USMC desert hats with wide brims. They work well for me. Most any surplus stores will have them. About $15 to $20 each. Take care of your skin. It's the only skin you will ever get!
Can't stand most BB caps, especially backwards. I've got one or two I'll wear occasionally, only when the sun's really in my eyes (that's what they're designed for, after all!). Light rain or drizzle, it's a wool beret--the single most useful headgear ever invented.
But when it's hot, sweatbands do it for me. First time framing many moons ago I couldn't keep my glasses from sliding down my nose; looked around and found a piece of a rag that wasn't too dirty--rolled it up and tied it around my head. The boss started calling me Ninja...?? I looked in the mirror of the truck: the rag was a scrap of cloth with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles printed on it!
Still use the same system; find a scrap of clean cotton print, rip it to the right size, and tie it on. Costs $$00$$, soaks up the sweat, bolts my glasses in place, and they're washable. Probably still have that Ninja one around here somewhere....

Wide-brimed straw hats are the best..........Hands down. Most people see mine and want to know where I got it. They don't last long. But they are the most effective protection I've found in 25 years working outside.
