My boiler is pushing smoke through the front burner plate. I opened it up and cleaned the boiler. ( it looked like it had not been cleaned for about 3 or 4 years) Started it up again and the smoke persisted. I have the boiler vented with a fields power venter. I feel like there is more soot in there but I can’t get at it. Any suggestions?

If not call the police.
As to your boiler I don't have a clue. But more details will help.
Start by is this gas, oil, coal, wood, or even electric boiler?

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Its an oil boiler. The power venter has been blowing out soot for a while. I opened up the burner plate a there was a pile of soot 5 inches thick. The smoke smells like surfur.
I'm assuming this is LP or NG fueled. Could be a clogged jet or restricted air intake.
Scott.
Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
The furnace needs to be cleaned, as what you have here is a "soot up" condition, which is dangerous. Oil burners, especially PEERLESS models need to be cleaned once a year, period. I heard of one incident where the furnace hadn't been cleaned for 3 years and the resulting backup of
smoke and fumes nearly killed the occupants of the home.
http://www.heatinghelp.com should have some pointers also.
