Stephen, just got thru fluting a abunch of columns, it aint exactly lite recreation. I love the guy who says look in the magazines for inspiration....I 've got loads of inspiration and plenty of ignorance to match all the things I would like to create. Fluting columns has been tuff!! how wide should they be? How deep should they be? How far apart should they be? WHY? How do you keep the damn Router from going wild with the grain when you least expect it? When do you use 1/2inch flutes and when do use 3/4 inch flutes? Should you stop the flutes up from the bottom and down from the top? How far from each end? WHY? Do you use a router or a shaper to make the flutes? I used alder and I managed about a .500 batting average so if you have better luck/skill then I did you wont need to buy so much wood. I beveled the edges. How much face should you show on a beveled edge for a fluted column? Well Stephen those are some of the questions I ran into, I will be watching to see who can help you find the RIGHT answers. Good Luck!

The answers to all of your questions is that all things are a matter of personal taste and what looks good to your eye. Something that looks good to you may look like sh!t to me and vice versa. Router or shaper? You choose, what works best for you? Control? Practice, practice, practice.
There are no right answers in matters of personal taste, only what you or more importantly, your customer like.

Half the distance to the center and twice the extremity thereof.
